How GCSE grades work

GCSE results in England run on a 9 to 1 scale. 9 is the highest. A grade 4 is a standard pass. A grade 5 is a strong pass. Each exam board (AQA, Edexcel, OCR, WJEC, CCEA) sets its own boundaries per subject per year, based on how hard that specific paper was. The boundaries move. The scale does not.

This calculator uses the 2024 boundaries published by each board. Year-on-year movement sits inside roughly 5 marks per grade in historical data, so the 2024 table remains a reliable reference for 2025 results until Ofqual publishes the August 2025 numbers.

Why this matters before results day

  • See whether you are on track for the predicted grade while there is still time to revise.
  • The gap between a 6 and a 7 is often 4 to 6 marks. One more past paper run closes it.
  • Target resits with numbers. Boundaries move a little year to year. The gap between grades holds steady.

Practise to the next grade with Flow

Gyanis Flow runs GCSE revision against AQA, Edexcel, and OCR specifications. Difficulty moves up after two correct in a row. You drill the topics where you are losing marks, not the topics you already know. See how Flow works.

Frequently asked

When are the 2025 grade boundaries released?

Each board releases the 2025 boundaries on results day in late August 2025. Until then, the 2024 numbers in this calculator are the best public reference.

What is a 9-9-9 GCSE?

A grade 9 in every subject, the top outcome on the reformed 9 to 1 scale. In 2024, around 4.9% of GCSE entries across England achieved a grade 9.

Does it cover Maths, English, and the Sciences?

Yes. Select the board and the subject in the calculator. Higher tier and Foundation tier are treated separately where the specification splits.
